The Game’s Afoot; or Holmes for the Holidays by Ken Ludwig
Winner 2012 Edgar Allan Poe Award from Mystery Writers of America for Best Play
‘Twas a dark and stormy night before Christmas, 1936,
when all through Gillette’s Castle, murder was afoot.
Actor William Gillette, known world-wide for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, is entertaining his fellow cast members for the holidays, when murder strikes. Gillette dons his deerstalker and investigates. Mysterious doings with the body, secret compartments, et al.
Directed by Mari Bonomi and Bob Walker
Cast members (3 men, 5 women):
William Gillette: middle-aged, striking, Holmesian
Martha Gillette: William’s mother
Felix Giesel: Watsonish cast member – can certainly be middle-aged
Madge Giesel: Felix’s wife
Simon Bright: cast member, youngish
Aggie Wheeler: cast member, hints of the ingenue but too worldly wise.
Daria Chase: theatrical writer, always chasing the gossip
Inspector Goring: female police detective, with all the attitude that position would require in 1936
